Marshall holds of the pack at Winton
Glenfords Racing will start from pole position for race two tomorrow at Winton Raceway after a great start today in race one slowly turned sour in the latter stages of the race.

Earlier this morning, bright sunshine greeted the field for qualifying and Glenfords AEG driver Marcus Marshall posted a strong 1:25.2338 on his seventh lap to qualify in 29th position.

Again the Glenfords team improved from yesterdays practice session and continued to find a better balance for the car.

Caught behind Steve Johnson on his final lap, Marshall was unable to post a faster time but with strong splits to that point the number 20 Falcon showed it still had a few tenths up its sleeve.

Starting from 29th on the grid, Marshall had a sensational start, climbing four positions by the first turn and continuing his early charge by finishing the first lap in 23rd.

Holding his position ahead of seasoned veterans Jason Bargwanna, John Bowe, Max Wilson and Paul Radisich, Marshall pitted on lap seven for his compulsory pit stop.

Another brilliant pit stop from the Glenfords Racing crew saw the Glenfords AEG Falcon come out in front of the experienced group and the battle resumed.

Marshall held his nerve on lap 12 heading into turn one when Bargwanna went too deep into the corner, while attempting passing move, and avoided the fellow Ford driver to hold onto 23rd.

A flat spot on the right front slowed Marshall and when Wilson got past Marshall on the inside, the Glenfords AEG driver was off the racing line and lost a number of positions in the pack as a result.

With the right front tyre degrading, and lap times suffering, Marshall's front right tyre suffered a puncture, sending him off the left hand sweeper at turn five, forcing another pitstop and costing him positions.

With the race drawing to a close, Marshall brought the Glenfords AEG Falcon home in 29th position, giving him pole position in tomorrow's second race.

The reverse grid race, where Marshall will start from the front of the grid, begins at 11am.

The car felt really good in qualifying and we probably had a few tenths up our sleeve as I got caught up on my best lap near the end, but the main thing was the balance of the car is getting much closer to what we are after."

"I had a great start to race one, making up six positions on the first lap, then we had a great battle with a number of other teams and we held our position through to the pits. The boys did a great pit stop and kept me in front of the pack but when Wilson passed me, I was stuck out on the dirty track and the others got through.

"I had a flat spot on the tyre which caused me some problems then it turned into a puncture which effectively finished our race was we had to pit again, but we have a car that's definitely improving each day so we'll come back again tomorrow and push hard from the front of the grid."

"Qualifying was good today, the car is constantly on the improve so that is pleasing."

"We had a great start and the crew did another great job in the pits, which considering they hadn't done pit stops before this year is a real credit to them.they've done some really great stops this year."

"Running in the high twenties was a great reward for the whole team but that flat spot really hurt us and we lost a lot of pace and eventually had to pit when we had the puncture.

"It's something we just can't afford to do (flat spot a tyre) in such a tough competition, but we'll front up ready to go tomorrow and we're starting up the front so we'll try and capitalise as much as we can on that.",",1,1,0,1,"2006-06-03 11:43:04
