One point for Patrizi on tough Brands weekend
Michael Patrizi has endured a tough weekend at Rounds 7 and 8 of the Formula BMW UK Championship at the Brands
Hatch GP circuit last weekend, coming away from the event with a solitary point. In atrocious weather conditions, Patrizi’s weekend was set back on Friday when he suffered a massive accident in practice at the fast circuit. Forced into a spare car and very sore, Patrizi was always going to be behind the eight ball from this point on. But the West Australian driver still soldiered on, driving with the aid of painkillers in an effort to reward the remarkable efforts of the Motaworld Racing team that prepared the spare chassis overnight.
Patrizi’s accident meant he missed qualifying for the first race, but starting from the rear of the field in 24th position, the 21-year-old drove the spare car superbly to be up to 10th at mid-race distance. He passed two further cars to be eighth until a red flag ended the race, with the race declared on the last full lap giving Patrizi 10th and one vital championship point.
The second race saw Patrizi qualify 13th on the grid, which was held in diabolical wet weather conditions. Patrizi was making progress through the field in the opening laps and was in eighth when another car aquaplaned on the waterlogged surface. In taking avoiding action, Patrizi spun and hit the wall backwards, ending what was a trying weekend.
