Despite a scare, hopeful racer Adrian Hull has made it through to Round 4 of the Shell Optimax F1 Drivers' Challenge, where 2,600 entrants compete against each other for the chance to test a Formula 1 car.
On Tuesday 16th May, 200 drivers took to karts and after a 10 minute practice session enjoyed 2 races, firstly of 10 minutes and then of 6 minutes.
Starting the first race from the randomly chosen 18th spot on the grid, Adrian suffered a bad start and traffic and dropped down to 22nd. However, by the chequered flag he certainly had managed to finish above of his start position.
By the time of the second race for Adrian's group, the rain was pouring and previous races had seen a large number of spinners. Adrian explained the race from his perspective:
"From 6th I managed to overtake everyone and go through the first corner in 1st place but dropped down to 2nd at turn two when I went a bit wide. I managed to keep 2nd place however to the end of the race."
At the end of the day the judges, including British GT driver Luke Hines, had the difficult choice of choosing the drivers who would progress to the next round. After not hearing his name, Adrian left the circuit disappointed; but the next day he received a phone call confirming the contrary, and he will be battling against 74 other hopefuls in what is likely to be a saloon car event in the near future.
