[Darlington & District Motor Club] National M'sport Weekend For Local Club At Croft PDF Print E-mail

NATIONAL MOTORSPORT WEEKEND FOR LOCAL CLUB AT CROFT.

Darlington & District Motor Club takes the reigns for the second car race meeting of the year at Croft Circuit this forthcoming weekend (May 20/21) and promises action all the way.

Local eyes will no doubt be on the very popular Northern Saloon & Sports Car Championship with two races each day. Last time out saw Darlington businessman, David Cox, just be pipped for outright honours in the nimble CarpetsOnline Peugeot but he could have the job made even more difficult by the ex British Touring Car Championship Honda of Simon Blankley from Durham let alone the awesome 5 litre MG ZT520 of Paul Luti. Hopefully, Steven Ferguson will have put the trials and tribulations of the last two rounds behind him and the Nissan Pulsar will be back on full song along with David Botterill (Ingleby Barwick) whose pair of Porsches have proved a little unreliable of late. The smaller engined class should see a renewal of the battle between Paul Moss (Citroen Saxo), Gavin Lee (Ford Fiesta) and Jason South (Peugeot 205).

David Botterill will also be bringing the Porsche out in the second race, taking on the might of Colin Simpson’s Marcos Mantis and York based Bernard Hogarth’s Ferrari 355. The success story is Class G with 11 cars contesting this class alone. Martyn Lightfoot (Stockton) should have the experience but David Carter (Darlington) should be sure to give him a race. The motorcycle engined Sylva Phoenix of Peter Isherwood, Tim Evans and Duncan Marshal have proven equally matched so far this year.

Racing Car enthusiasts are catered for with the BARC Formula Renault Championship. The drivers come from all over the country to contest this race with Richard Singleton (Conwy) and James Littlejohn (Warwick) looking to head the points table after Croft. Ian Pearson from Didcot heads the Club Class.

The longest races of the weekend fall to the Uniroyal Fun Cup. Purpose built 1600cc racing cars with plastic VW Beetle bodies will race over 3 hours and have up to 4 drivers sharing the driving. Including entries from Belgium, these races will see around 28 teams take the grid with compulsory pit stops livening up proceedings.

The Fun Cup will be based in the garages and DDMC has decided to give the spectators access to the Pit Lane prior to racing on Sunday and, as an added bonus, will also have the Northern Saloon & Sports Car race on the grid to allow spectators to meet the drivers and see their cars immediately prior to the start of racing.

Saturday kicks off with practice at 9.30am with racing starting at 1pm. On Sunday the Pit Lane and Grid Walkabout will be at 11.30am followed by racing from 12.15. Admission is
