Supercheap Auto Racing Preview Report

V8 Supercar Series Round 3 – Perth V8 400, Barbagallo Raceway

Supercheap Auto Racing heads west to Perth’s Barbagallo Raceway for this weekend’s third round of the V8 Supercar Championship Series.

After a character building start to the season, SCAR drivers Cameron McConville and Greg Murphy are looking to get their seasons back on track and are confident their like for the Perth circuit will see the two Supercheap Auto Racing Commodores figure strongly in the results.

Both Supercheap Auto Racing in its previous guise as PWR Racing and Murphy have a strong history at Barbagallo in recent years; Jason Bright winning for PWR in 2004 and Paul Weel recording two top 10 finishes in 2003 and ’04, Murphy finishing second three times (1997, 2002, ‘03), third in 2001 and a further two top 10 finishes (10th in 2000 and 7th in 2004).

McConville too has a solid history at the circuit, having finished inside the top 10 three times in the past four years, while he also previously held the Formula Ford track record for over 10 years.
Although repaired in time to contest the final two races at the last round in New Zealand after a Race 1 starting shunt, after closer inspection after its arrival back in Australia revealed more significant damage, Murphy’s #51 SCAR Commodore has again been entirely rebuilt from the firewall forward.

CAMERON McCONVILLE – #50 Supercheap Auto Holden Commodore VZ “I’m not sure what it is about Barbagallo, but I always seem to do well there. I suppose it dates back to my Formula Ford days when I won there in 1992, which set up my championship that year. I even held the FFord lap record for 10 years!

“While we haven’t had the start to the season we hoped for at Supercheap Auto Racing, it’s not time to start panicking just yet. We’re not that far away, so I’m hoping we can get things back on track for the team in Perth.

“We just need to make sure we’ve got all our ducks lined up in the right order and have a little luck go our way.”

GREG MURPHY - #51 Supercheap Auto Holden Commodore VZ “It’s been another tough couple of weeks on our team, working around the clock again to fix the damage to my car after it was found to be worse than what we thought when it arrived back from New Zealand.

“Even still, everything’s fixed and we’re heading to Perth in an extremely positive frame of mind. We ran well there last year, finishing fifth in Race 1 and leading Race 2 until an axle broke. We’ve been working on plans to make our car better and I’m hopeful we will achieve just that.

“At the moment we’re not figuring in the points, so it would be nice to slip under the radar and bring home a result for everyone on the Supercheap Auto Racing team – they’ve all been putting in long, hard hours and deserve one.”
