SAMAX - Laguna Seca podium
SAMAX Motorsport notched its first 2006 podium finish in the Rolex Sports Car Series race at Laguna Seca Raceway. Ian James started the No. 17 SAMAX Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car fourth on the GT grid and moved to lead the class after 45 minutes of the two-hour 45-minute race. Ryan Hunter Reay drove the second stint, returning to the track in fourth place. He moved to third just past the two-hour mark and held the position for the podium finish.
Their teammates weren't as fortunate. Dave Lacey started the No. 71 SAMAX/ Doncaster Racing Porsche 10th in GT and quickly gained two positions in the first four minutes of the race. His charge stopped when he was zapped by the first of seven caution periods, losing a lap to the class leaders due to his position relative to the safety car. Greg Wilkins drove the second stint, returning to the track 10th. He regained one position to finish ninth.
