ATONEMENT TIME
It was atonement time for David Ryan at round three of the Shannons Australian Production Car Championship when he topped the points after a second in race one and two wins at Oran Park on the weekend of May 6-7.
It was just the tonic following a shattering race exclusion at the second round – so too for Drew Russell who was second overall after also encountering problems at Symmons Plains.
Again it was Ryan who was the fastest – for the eighth time straight actually, but the Falcon XR6 Turbo driver bogged down at the start allowing Russell to momentarily take the front running.
Even better off the line was Steve Briffa in his Holden Commodore SSZ who jigged his way to the lead by turn two. The Fords of John Houlder (XR8) and Nick Dunkley (XR6 Turbo) were vying for fourth until a touch between the pair spun both coming off the bridge.
That brought out a safety car - although hardly warranted as they quickly got underway again. Briffa resumed his winning ways at the front while Ryan went defensive to hold off Russell.
Adam Beechey (Honda Integra) was next from Colin Osborne (Toyota Celica), then the Trophy class Falcon XR8 of Matt Brady. Dunkley finished seventh but was excluded for over boosting which elevated Rob Rubis (BMW 323i) a spot along with Trevor Keene (MR2), Darren Best (Ford Focus) and Houlder.
The first of the handicap races had Best on his own and away five seconds in front of Class B (and Trophy) where Beechey led from Rubis until Osborne found away around the latter’s BMW.
Twenty one seconds later Class C set off with Briffa led from Houlder, Dunkley, Russell and Ryan who started from pitlane.
Beechey took over the lead on the third tour before a safety car came out when the Best Focus sheared its right front wheel nuts at turn two.
The handicap was ruined by this stage with Beechey quickly rounded up by Russell at the resumption. But the Honda S2000 driver could not hold off Ryan in the run to the flag.
Beechey was third from Houlder, Osborne, Rubis, Dunkley, Keene and Brady but Briffa blew the engine on his Commodore, joining the similar car of Mertens (continuing oil surge) in the pits.
Best was back for the last race, leading for only a lap though, as Beechey took over. The Honda Integra held the front running right up to lap ten where Ryan took over to win. Beechey looked likely to hold second until an off on the last lap allowed Russell through.
Osborne finished fourth just in front of Rubis while Houlder won an entertaining dice over Dunkley, and Keene finished ahead of Best and Brady.
